Planboo and their partner Wong Phai operate a transformative community project in Ratchaburi, Thailand, focused on converting bamboo offcuts into biochar. This initiative is a critical step in addressing the environmental challenges of burning bamboo waste and offers substantial benefits to the local community.

Partnering with local bamboo marketplaces (enterprises producing artisanal bamboo crafts and furniture), Wong Phai's project repurposes discarded bamboo offcuts into biochar, an innovative solution that prevents CO2 emissions from open burning.

Permanence: 1000+ years

The durability of this project is 1,000 years. There are currently many studies being done, including the one cited below, to prove that biochar in soils does indeed meet the higher ends of permanence (e.g. 1,000 years). When retiring a c-sink via the registry, it calculates the persistence over 1,000 years.

How the project approaches risk of reversal

Planboo guarantees permanence in their carbon credits by ensuring stringent temperature checks and analysis of the hydrogen-to-carbon (H:C) ratio of the biochar are carried out during biochar production. High-persistence biochar is created by a low H:C ratio and close-ringed molecules. Planboo tracks, measures, and records temperatures of the Lalan Rubbers project using the IoT Greenbox device to ensure temperatures exceed 550°C and that the H:C ratio is less than 0.4. Additionally, representative samples from every cook are sent to an EBC-authorized laboratory annually to quantify the carbon content and H:C ratio.
