Description
The Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project protects and restores 157,875 hectares of tropical peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Without intervention, the area was slated for conversion to industrial acacia plantations, and extensive emissions from peat degradation and fire were anticipated. The project blocked this fate by securing a legally binding ecosystem restoration concession that authorizes forest protection, restoration, and management activities across the entire concession area. In practice, this means patrolling for illegal logging, blocking drainage canals to restore the peatland's natural water levels, training community fire brigades, and supporting alternative livelihoods like agroforestry and eco-tourism. Over its 60-year crediting period, the project is expected to avoid 402.58 million tCO₂e — an average of 6.7 million tonnes per year.
The project area sits within a Key Biodiversity Area, and monitoring has recorded 109 threatened species, including the Critically Endangered Bornean Orangutan and Sunda Pangolin. It also maintains an ecological corridor connecting the project area to Sebangau National Park. Zero large-scale fires have been recorded across the 149,800-hectare project area, the result of early detection systems, an active fire management structure, and close collaboration with local communities and government. To further stabilize the peatland, 80 canal blocks have been built to restore natural hydrology across the project area.
The project works with 34 surrounding villages across five sub-districts. Through 80 formal partnership agreements, the project has improved livelihoods for 3,987 people and improved the overall well-being of 6,581 individuals. Capacity building has reached 44 local institutions, from village forest groups and women's cooperatives to community fire teams. The project has also brought clean energy to remote areas: solar panels were installed in Tampelas villages to power homes, community facilities, and a local processing operation.

The durability of this project is 60 years, based on its crediting period. This crediting period is extendable to 100 years. However, the project benefits are expected to extend beyond this time scale. The effective protection status of the forest and peatlands is anticipated to be maintained and extended, either through a further concession license or directly under state ownership as the global importance of the stored carbon stocks and biodiversity are fully recognized.

How the project approaches risk of reversal
The project addresses the risk of reversal through a combination of natural risk mitigation, legal safeguards, and long-term institutional protections. Fire is managed through a dedicated prevention and response program that includes participatory fire risk mapping, early warning systems based on weather forecasting and water level monitoring, watch towers and monitoring posts in fire-prone areas, trained community firefighting teams equipped with extinguishing equipment, and fire-break plantings using fire-resistant native species along canal edges. Peatland degradation, a key driver of fire and carbon loss, is addressed by rewetting drained areas through canal blocking and dam construction, and by conserving undrained peatland to reduce peat oxidation. Reforestation uses a mix of native species rather than monocultures, which limits susceptibility to pest and disease outbreaks. The project also enforces legal protections against illegal logging, unauthorized drainage, and land clearing by fire, using boundary demarcation, ranger patrols, and community-based monitoring and reporting systems. Reversal risk is further reduced by the project's long-term legal standing: it operates under a 60-year ecosystem restoration concession that is extendable to 100 years, and it maintains formal agreements with surrounding communities that support continued protection of the project area.
What actions would be taken by the project developer if anticipated emissions reductions do not take place, or if carbon removal is reversed in the future?
In the event of a potential reversal, the project's buffer pool acts as a safety measure to cover the potential loss of carbon credits. A risk analysis was performed using the AFOLU Non-Permanence Risk Tool. With this tool, a risk factor of 14% was established, along with a corresponding buffer pool.
