This project mineralizes CO₂ in concrete, permanently removing it from the atmosphere. That allows the reduction or elimination of concrete’s cement ingredient, which is responsible for about 7% of global emissions. CarbonBuilt replaces cement with low- or no-carbon, regionally-available industrial byproduct materials, promoting a circular economy. Their XPrize-winning technology reduces the embodied carbon of concrete products by 70 to 100% or more with no impact on price, performance, or plant operations.
CarbonBuilt retrofits existing concrete product producers with its carbon curing technology to reduce their global warming potential (GWP). Their first retrofit was in mid-2023 at an Alabama block plant to produce ultra-low carbon concrete blocks (greater than 70% GWP reduction) now available for purchase, with reductions and removals being generated and delivered. Their second plant is in Arizona. Subsequent plants around the country are in negotiation.
Revenue from carbon credits will be shared with CarbonBuilt’s historically risk-averse concrete producer partners to grow their margin post-retrofit and make a stronger financial case for accelerating adoption.
