This project removes CO₂ from the atmosphere by harnessing the natural weathering process of olivine, a mineral found all over the world. The olivine is ground up and used outdoors on things like pathways, parking lots, and railway lines. Depending on sediment transfer, olivine weathering can result in the alkalization of runoff and/or the formation of carbonate precipitates. This leads to the safe and permanent storage of CO₂.
greenSand is equipped with a special tracking system whereby each tonne of CO₂ purchased has a unique identifier linking it to the specific location where the olivine is located.
NOTE to buyers: Thanks to an ex-ante forward purchase agreement, tonnage is available at the time of project deployment—which has been completed—in expectation of future emission reductions set to occur from the time of deployment through the course of the project's lifetime (25 years). At the time of issuance, carbon removal has begun and the project has been deployed (rock being spread), but the entirety of the carbon removal process has not yet been completed. GreenSand will deliver a certificate confirming the purchase and provide updates related to carbon dioxide removal rates as data becomes available.
