Leading the 'biocharge' in Sri Lanka through verified carbon removal from bamboo and agriculture plant-waste biochar.
Planboo is on a mission to scale carbon removal while improving agricultural soil health in the tropics with biochar and compost.
Already implemented across large Sri Lankan tea, cinnamon, and rubber plantations, this project teaches local farmers how to boost compost production through the development of biochar. From designing and fabricating kilns to finding the perfect blends of organic liquid compost, the solution is now ready to be scaled throughout the country.
In 2021, the Sri Lankan government banned the import of chemical fertilizers overnight, sighting economic and environmental concerns. The immediate aftermath revealed just how addicted to fertilizers the crops had become, as well as the poor state of the soils they were surviving in. Crops yields plummeted by 60%, which worsened the economic situation and led to countrywide protests that forced the majority of politicians to resign—including the president.
Carbon removal credits purchased from the Planboo Sri Lanka Biochar project will enable more landowners to start restoring soil health, improving crop yields in turn and providing much-needed foreign income at a time when the country is on the brink of economic collapse.
Planboo uses a first-of-its-kind methodology, accredited by the European Biochar Certificate and ensuring the highest level of monitoring, reporting, and verification in carbon removal.
